The Next Bass Management Plan is being developed by the Wisconsin DNR. This is being done without involvement by the general population. This is a change from the last development committee which consisted of a 50/50 mix of DNR and non-DNR development team members. The previous team had participants that included Professional fishing Guide, B.A.S.S. Federation members, Smallmouth Alliance Members and Conservation Congress Members. That format allowed troublesome and over reaching portions of the plan to be flushed out prior to release of the plan for review. While the B.A.S.S. Federation’s relationship with the WDNR has greatlyimproved in the last few years under Secretary Cathy Stepp the recent departure of Scott Gunderson to the Revenue Department and the Retirement of Fisheries head Ron Burch leave a vacuum that should be of concern.
All that being said I believe that we need to push towards reestablishing the previous collaborative Bass Team structure and build upon its strengths and results. Bass fishing has thrived under that plan and the format that was used to create it.
Let’s work to keep a good thing going.
